Salary: £25,313.13 per annum (£12.70 per hour)

We have a vacancy for a Crematorium General Assistant to join our dedicated team at Birmingham Crematorium. As a General Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the crematorium, contributing to an environment of respect and dignity while providing essential assistance to both our staff and the families we serve.

Here is what a typical day could look like for you:

As a Crematorium General Assistant, you will provide essential support and assistance in various aspects of crematorium operations, this will include...

  • Oversee the operation of gas-fired or electric cremators and ancillary equipment whilst also ensuring the safe custody of cremated remains left in the care of the crematorium.
  • To undertake the full range of gardening, cemetery and horticultural tasks.
  • Responsible for opening and closing the site gates and book of remembrance room.
  • Maintain the grounds to the highest standard in accordance with recognised horticultural and grounds maintenance practices.
  • Construct, place, and fix memorials and subsequently maintain them to the highest standard.
  • Operate the cremators and ancillary equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Ensure the highest standards of housekeeping both in and outside the Chapel and ancillary rooms.
  • Prepares chapels for each service considering client needs including varying religious requirements.
  • Conduct witness interments and scattering of the cremated remains.
  • Ensuring the consistent delivery of the highest levels of client service.

This role will suit someone who:

  • Able to work effectively in physically demanding environments. 
  • Excellent customer service experience and ability to build rapport with people easily.
  • High attention to detail is essential.
  • Proactive approach and willingness to communicate effectively with a range of people, both in-person, over the phone and via email.
  • Ability to successfully multitask and meet multiple deadlines. 
  • Computer literate in addition to experience using Microsoft packages (Outlook, Word, and Excel). 
  • Presentable at all times, acting with professional conduct and showing empathy.
