Looking for a role where you can make a real difference?

Join us at our Recruitment Open Day on Thursday 28th August to meet the team, learn about Dignity, and explore the rewarding opportunity of becoming a Funeral Service Operative.

About the Role

As a Funeral Service Operative, you’ll play a vital role in supporting families with compassion and care during some of life’s most difficult moments. Based at our Care Centres in either Orpington or Camberwell, you’ll be hands-on throughout the funeral process — from collecting and caring for the deceased to assisting with services and supporting families.

This is a practical, emotionally rewarding role that involves both early and late shifts, as well as occasional out-of-hours support.

Why Attend the Open Day?

  • Meet Our Team – Learn what it’s like to work with Dignity
  • Understand the Role – See how you’ll support every stage of the funeral journey
  • Tour the Environment – Get a feel for the care and professionalism behind the scenes
  • Ask Questions – Get honest answers from the people doing the job
  • Informal Interview – Be considered for the role on the day

What We’re Looking For:

No prior funeral experience is needed — just the right mindset. We’ll provide full training and support. You’ll be a great fit if you:

  • Show compassion, professionalism, and discretion
  • Are physically capable of manual handling and lifting
  • Are comfortable working in contact with the deceased in various environments
  • Hold a Full UK Driving Licence (essential)
  • Are flexible and willing to work unsociable hours
  • Take pride in presenting yourself in a professional and respectful way

Shift Pattern:

You will work four days per week, on a 10-hour shift rota across seven days, including weekends. Shift patterns will alternate between:

  • Early Shift: 4:00 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Late Shift: 2:00 PM – 12:00 AM

Flexibility is essential, as the role involves working as part of a rota that includes weekends and out-of-hours support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive and operate specialist vehicles (e.g., hearses, limousines)
  • Set up venues and carry out ceremonial duties (e.g., coffin bearing)
  • Collect and care for the deceased with sensitivity and professionalism
  • Prepare the deceased according to cultural and family preferences
  • Support chapel visits and family interactions
  • Ensure high standards in all equipment, vehicles, and facilities

What We Offer:

  • A truly meaningful role supporting local families
  • Full training and development opportunities
  • 30–33 days annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays)
  • Company pension and life assurance
  • Uniform and all required equipment provided
  • Annual bonus and access to wellbeing support
